The route: I-580 south to North Carson Street
Take I-580 south and leave it at North Carson Street. That's the whole trip: 31 miles, about 40 minutes, from Reno or Sparks. I-580 starts at the Spaghetti Bowl, its interchange with I-80; coming from Sparks, take I-80 west to it. At the south edge of Reno you pass the Mount Rose Highway, the road up toward North Lake Tahoe.
Not to scale. 31 mi, about 40 min from Reno or Sparks via I-580. From Sparks, take I-80 west to I-580 first.
Galena Creek Bridge
South of the Mount Rose Highway, the freeway crosses Galena Creek on a tall concrete arch. Before this stretch opened, US-395 ran down on the floor of Pleasant Valley; the old road is still there.
Washoe Valley
The road drops into Washoe Valley, with Washoe Lake in the valley. To the west, Slide Mountain shows the landslide scars it's named for. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad ran through here from 1872 to 1950, and its old grade is still visible.
North Carson Street
Take the North Carson Street exit and follow North Carson Street south to number 1831. Look for the yellow sign; the parking lot is right in front.
Why Reno and Sparks shoppers make the drive
Because it's Northern Nevada's largest antique mall, and it's 40 minutes away. Searching for an antique mall near Reno? Ours fills two floors with over 21,000 square feet of numbered vendor booths. It's at 1831 N Carson St and open every day from 10 to 6.
Each booth is stocked by a different vendor, so the aisle changes every few steps: road signs, then teacups, then a lit case of coins. Not everything is antique. Vintage, collectibles and newer decor sit side by side, as the sign out front says: Gifts · Home Decor · Art · Toys & More. There's an upstairs, too.
The slow way: Old US-395 through Washoe Valley
Not in a hurry? Old US-395, now signed US-395 Alternate, was the main road before the freeway. Follow South Virginia Street south past the Mount Rose Highway junction. It becomes the Carson–Reno Highway through the Steamboat Hills and Pleasant Valley, climbs Washoe Summit, and runs as Bowers Mansion Road along the west side of Washoe Valley. Rejoin I-580 in the valley for the last stretch.
The stop on this road is Bowers Mansion. Sandy and Eilley Bowers built it with a Gold Hill silver fortune; Washoe County calls them Nevada's first Comstock Lode millionaires. It's a county park now, and the mansion's guided tours are seasonal, so check the county's schedule before you plan around it.
Wind, snow and weekdays: timing the trip
Washoe Valley gets wind. NDOT runs a wind warning system on US-395 through Washoe Valley and Pleasant Valley, and drivers must obey the posted restrictions. That matters if you're bringing a trailer or a tall rental van to haul a hutch home.
Check the road first. NVRoads.com, Nevada's 511 site, posts closures, chain controls and highway cameras. Look before you leave, especially in winter. Our drive times are for clear roads.
No car? There's a weekday bus.
The RTC Regional Connector (Carson Express) runs Monday to Friday between downtown Reno's RTC 4th Street Station, Meadowood Mall, the Summit Mall Park & Ride and Carson City. Its Carson City stops include North Carson Street and College Parkway, north of us on the same street. It keeps commuter hours, with early-morning and late-afternoon runs each way and no weekend service. It's a one-year pilot that started June 1, 2026, so check RTC for current service.
A Reno & Sparks hunting list
Booths change as vendors sell and restock, so this is a list of ideas, not an inventory. Everything named here has turned up on our last looks.
- Railroad pieces. Sparks grew up around a Southern Pacific switch yard built in 1904, and the V&T tied Reno to Carson City by rail from 1872. If that's your history, look for lanterns; we've seen a railroad lantern in the booths.
- Coins with a "CC." Carson City's old Mint struck coins with the "CC" mark from 1870 to 1893. On our last look, the Currency booths had coins in labeled holders in a lit case marked "Coins." New to it? Read how to start a coin collection.
- Garage and shop walls. A Phillips 66 sign, a California 32 marker, hubcaps. Before you pay for a sign, read how to spot real vintage signs.
- The game room. A 1989 World Series pennant. An M&M's dispenser. Odd, specific, and exactly the point.
Selling, not shopping? Vendors rent the numbered booths. Ask about renting a booth.
Make a day of it from Reno
Shop first. Doors open at 10, and a couple of hours is about right; that's what Suzy C. spent "just exploring," per her Google review. Then:
- Walk to the old Mint. The Nevada State Museum, in the old Carson City Mint, is 0.7 miles south, about a 15-minute walk. The "CC" coins were struck there.
- See the railroad that ran up your valley. The Nevada State Railroad Museum (2180 S Carson St, about a 10-minute drive) has Virginia & Truckee locomotives and cars.
- Take the long way home. Old US-395 passes Bowers Mansion. Or take the Eastlake Boulevard exit to Washoe Lake State Park for views of the Sierra Nevada, Carson and Virginia ranges, plus American white pelicans and bald eagles.
Check each place's hours before you go. More stops are on our Carson City day-trip guide.
